SLAYER LOOKS BACK ON 37 YEARS
Episode 1

 SLAYER  Final World Tour

June 2, 2018

PNC Bank Arts Center

Holmdel, NJ

When the metal gods in SLAYER announced that after 37 years of creating skull-crushing music they were touring one final time, I found myself reminiscing through my memories of the band.    Topping the list for me was interviewing SLAYER drummer Paul Bostaph in person on the final Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival.  I met guitarist Gary Holt backstage then sat down with Bostaph and we talked about the soon to be released album "Repentless".   Scoring a copy of "When The Stillness Comes" during Record Store day in 2015 was badass.  I was so stoked to hear the first new single from SLAYER in over a year and of course it killed.  Then of course there's the music. The speed, the aggression, the pure heaviness  of what Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman, Gary Holt, Dave Lombardo, and Paul Bostaph were able to create will live long after this final tour.

SLAYER's final tour hit Holmdel, NJ on June 2nd, a Saturday night, featuring Testament, Behemoth, Anthrax, and Lamb of God as touring support.  An incredible night of thrash metal ended with the headliners tearing through songs from their phenomenal career, 19 songs in total!  In usual SLAYER fashion flames were evident through the show and the set opener blew fans away.  The group of fans surrounding me were in awe of the graphics featuring crosses and pentagrams swirling over a see-through  curtain in front of the stage which showed an immense amount of flames onstage.  Then Araya, King, Holt, and Bostaph came out and kicked off the night with the fast thrasher "Repentless".  The band performs live just as they do on record.  What you heard through your speakers is what you get live.  Perfect example for me tonight was "When The Stillness Comes" .  Guitar legend Kerry King (who's birthday is tomorrow) was in the spotlight and sounded perfect note for note with the songs unmistakable opening riff.    Even Araya, who is truly hung out there alone at moments on this song, killed it, sounding strong as ever especially when the song goes from spoken lyrics to hellacious  lines.  One of the highlights of the night for me.

SLAYER brought out songs such as "Jihad" and "Dittohead" adding to a sick set list that included all the hits including "War Ensemble", "Angel of Death", "Mandatory Suicide", "Chemical Warfare", "South of Heaven", "Dead Skin Mask", "Seasons in the Abyss", and of course the smash "Raining Blood".

Slayer's final tour was a blast to witness and along with my fellow concertgoers which had to have been close to 15,000 in number it was a night to add to my memories of one of the greatest bands of all time......SLAAAAAYER!!!!
