iTunes  and Amazon .  Spotify has it here .

Clutch’s song “How to Shake Hands” traces its lineage back to Ry Cooder and John Lee Hooker via the song “John Lee Hooker for President”.  In that song Ry Cooder impersonates JLH giving a stump speech on what will happen when he becomes President.

Clutch’s original idea of covering the Ry Cooder song was soon abandoned as vocalist Neil Fallon said he couldn’t do the song justice.  Instead, Neil put his own lyrics in the style of Ry Cooder/JLH to a new Clutch song which ended up becoming the fast-paced “How to Shake Hands”.

Each of the single releases from Book of Bad Decisions is accompanied by a Spotify playlist put together by one of the band members.  In this instance guitarist Tim Sult is responsible for surrounding “How To Shake Hands” with other songs to his liking:  “Since Neil mentioned Jimi Hendrix and Bill Hicks in ‘How To Shake Hands’, I decided to make a playlist including both.  Classic guitar playing meets classic comedy.  What could go wrong?”

Review

Book of Bad Decisions
Released  September 7, 2018
Label - Weathermaker Music

For their 12th full-length album, Maryland rockers Clutch highlight all the best aspects of what they put forth on record throughout their career; groove rock, soulful blues, thought-provoking lyrical content, full-bodied drums, and a good fucking time!

One of the many things that draws me to Clutch is their uniqueness and ability to give me something refreshing.  Vocalist Neil Fallon, guitarist Tim Sult, bassist Dan Maines, and drummer Jean-Paul Gaster develop songs that can go all out rock, full bore blues, or really any direction they see fit.  Throw in funk bass grooves or jazz-influenced drums, Clutch do what a song needs.

For “Book of Bad Decisions” they go in multiple directions.  The lead song “Gimme The Keys” has Fallon’s vocals as the focal point with the music methodically taking a break throughout the song to give a power punch.  When the band fires it up together….man it’s a hard rock delight!  You can picture Fallon’s on stage stance as he’s belting out this tune.  Classic way to open an album.

The title track is brilliant with Maines laying down a cool funky bass groove underneath Sult’s power guitar.  And throughout the track there’s Jean-Paul behind the kit playing in his classic style of fun, laid back jazz/blues/rock drumming.  I can focus on his drumming and just drift off into no man’s land.  Amazing talent!

“How To Shake Hands” is Fallon throwing in a political themed tune as he’s known to do.  Whatever your political view is, Fallon makes you think about the whole process and sometimes the innate silliness of it all and on this one he succeeds again.

“Hot Bottom Feeder” has to be the first ever song about the that Maryland delicacy…..the crab cake.  The song rock and gives a pretty damn good recipe on cooking a bad ass crab cake too!

Give the song “Sonic Counselor” a listen.  This song wraps up a lot of what Clutch is about.  Great track with each band member nailing it.  This song’s heartbeat is rock and could be one of those songs that gets extended live.  The music just lends itself to jamming!

And come on, how do you not love a song titled “Emily Dickinson”.  Lyrics on this one are written like a poem, descriptive meaningful lines that flow and detail works of Ms. Dickinson.

Clutch is out on the road now and just announced their annual Holiday run of shows for the end of the year.  For all things Clutch go to

Concert Review

October 28, 2018

Franklin Music Hall

Philadelphia, PA
Review by Megan C. Brooks

At the Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia on Sunday night Clutch headlined an incredible show. You might think, where’s Franklin Music Hall, is it new? No it’s just The Electric Factory. There are new owners and they had to change the name. Other then that it’s exactly the same.  Anyway, Clutch headlined with Sevendust supporting and Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown opening the show.

The concert started right around 7:30 as planned, with Tyler Bryant and the Shakedown crammed up in the front of the stage. The Shakedown is a relatively young band that sounds like some great old 1970’s rock band. One reason may be that one guitarist is Graham Whitford, son of Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. The other guitarist and singer is the band’s namesake, Tyler Bryant, who’s been touring professionally since he was fifteen years old. The whole band is really talented, keep an eye on them for the future.

You might think why Sevendust with a blues rock band and Clutch? Clutch can be tossed into the blues rock category sometimes, but they are generally a band that jumps genres regularly.  However, Sevendust has a constant nu-metal sound, that Clutch has never sounded like. So what brought them together? In 1998, Clutch and Sevendust toured with Limp Bizkit and became friends and have been for the past 20 years. Lead singer Lajon Witherspoon talked about it on stage after getting a little attitude from the predictably hard to please Philadelphia crowd.  They played a couple songs from their latest album 'All I See is War' which came out this past Spring. They played a short set, but were able to fit in some fan favorites like “Denial” and “Bitch”. Then ended the set with “Thank You”.

After a little waiting, some chanting for Clutch and the recording of “We Need Some Money” by Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers Clutch casually came onto the stage. If you’ve never seen Clutch, you could bump into them at the grocery store and never know they’re kick-ass musicians with twelve albums.  Their concerts are always intense and well performed. They literally never miss a beat.  As aforementioned Clutch’s sound is very diverse and attracts fans of all ages.  At this show there were a lot of kids, not teenagers, little grade school aged kids. There were several children toward the front close to the stage. The crowd was unaware of this and pushed and moshed around until Neil Fallon, the lead singer, had to inform the crowd and declare a safe zone for the kids.  They played a flawless set with songs from their first album all the way to the most recent release 'Book of Bad Decisions' released Sept 7, 2018.

Clutch is headed to Europe next and will be back in this area for their usual east coast Christmas run towards the end of December.  Wherever you are, if Clutch in your town, make sure to see them live.
